Consulting and design for thermal storage
Caldum 1 and Caldum 2 are our own solutions for compact thermal storage — the first for homes, the second for larger buildings. For situations where another route fits better — water buffers, other phase-change materials, hybrid combinations — we design and calculate alongside. Same physics, same calculations, different materials.
What we do
We are specialists in thermal storage. Caldum is what comes out when we build our own optimal solution. But for specific constraints — a refurbishment with limited space, a building with short cyclical heat demand, a process with unusual temperature requirements — a different technique can be more sensible. For those cases we deliver:
- Feasibility studies for thermal storage in new construction and refurbishment
- Sizing and system design for specific constraints
- Materials selection: water, sensible-heat media, phase-change materials, hybrid combinations
- Integration advice with heat pumps, PV installations and heating networks
- Second opinion on existing designs
When is another solution more sensible?
A few situations where Caldum isn’t automatically the answer:
- Short cyclical storage (hours to days). For heat that is charged and used within a day, water is usually sufficient. A properly sized water tank is then cheaper and simpler.
- Very large volumes with outdoor space. At large scale — a district system with a field to spare — underground water storage or an aquifer can be more sensible than compact modular buffers.
- Specific temperature regimes. Industrial applications up to 700°C, or very low temperatures, call for different materials.
- Research and pilot systems. For laboratories or research where the point is to experiment with materials, we help with setup and measurements.
Which materials do we work with?
- Water (short-term buffers, storage tanks, low temperatures)
- Heavy ores and other sensible-heat media (medium temperature)
- Salt mixtures and phase-change materials
- Hybrid systems (combinations of the above, optional heat-pump integration)
What an engagement looks like
No fixed track — every situation is different. An engagement usually follows these steps:
Exploratory conversation (no obligation). A short talk about the situation. What is the building, what is the heat demand, what is already in place, and what needs to change. Based on that we decide together whether there is an engagement in it.
Quick scan (1–3 days). A brief study of what makes technical and economic sense. Does Caldum fit, or something else? The result is a note with a recommendation.
Feasibility study or design (variable). Hourly rate, with scope and deliverables agreed in advance. Here we go into detail on sizing, materials, integration and cost calculation.
Optional: support during execution. For those who want us to stay involved during installation and commissioning.
Honest advice
We sell Caldum, and we advise on alternatives. The two belong together: by making our own product, we know precisely where salt-based storage works and where it doesn’t. But that also means our advice isn’t a non-committal way to push Caldum. If water fits better, we say so. If nothing fits, we say that too.
An honest no is worth more than a non-committal maybe.
